Kuohu waters are sold and served in elegant glass bottles – a conscious decision we made to protect the quality of our waters and the environment.
Already the ancient Egyptians…
Glass has been used as packaging material for several millenniums, starting from the ancient Egyptians and Romans. The main ingredients of glass are sand, limestone, and soda ash, so there is no fear of them running out.
Clear glass, like the one used in our bottles, contains no heavy metals, and no harmful substances dissolve from it. This ensures our bottled waters remain pure and fresh, but more importantly, protects us from harmful effects to our health.
As a material, glass is harder than plastic, so it won’t scratch as easily. Why is this worth mentioning? Scratches are nesting places for microbes and impurities, and we wanted to avoid them.
Recycling? Glass never dies
Glass is very easy to clean and to reuse. If we think of the whole life cycle of bottles, glass is a material that can be completely recycled – over, and over, and over again without loss in quality or purity.
Plastic recycling is becoming more and more common globally, but unfortunately reprocessed plastic is not always approved as a packaging material for food or beverages. There are strict regulations concerning food grade packaging materials, and most recycled plastics do not meet the criteria.
And then there is the issue of microplastics. Our ecosystem is being bombarded with tiny particles of plastic because we produce and use too much plastic products. You can read more about microplastics, e.g., in the Nature journal.
So, it is great if you recycle, but better yet: avoid using plastic whenever you can. That’s what we did: we removed plastic from our whole production process. The groundwater from our wells has been tested and proven to be completely free of microplastics, and we want to keep it that way.

Our glass bottles are produced in Estonia where we found a manufacturer heavily investing in environmentally friendly manufacturing processes. This glass bottle manufacturer is also the nearest to our plant in Kuohu, so by choosing them, we can minimize the effects of transportation.
