What is artesian water?

Water from the surface of the Earth becomes groundwater when it is filtered through the different layers of sand and soil. Beneath the surface, groundwater is collected in pockets of impermeable rock or clay called aquifers. 

The impermeable layer around the aquifer applies positive pressure – so-called artesian pressure – to the water. When a well is drilled into the aquifer, the artesian pressure makes the water rise toward the surface of the Earth on its own. This is called an artesian source. When the pressure is strong enough, it brings the water all the way up to the ground becoming a flowing artesian well. The artesian sources have often been used as natural water sources for generations. 

Our company has five artesian sources of varying depths on its plot. We use two of them for bottling our water: Deep Rock, Clear and Bedrock. Deep Rock is, as the name suggests, the deepest of the two, 200 meters, Clear is 45 and Bedrock is 60 meters deep. The two other sources that are not in active use, vary in depth from 35 meters to 200 meters.

What are the benefits of artesian water?

Artesian water has travelled slowly down towards the core of the Earth before rising to the surface again. On its long way down, the water has been thoroughly filtered from impurities, and gently enriched with natural substances from the bedrock. The geology of the bedrock determines the concentrations of the various elements, and their amounts are affected by the porosity of the bedrock. 

Because of the natural mineral content, artesian water has a soft, pleasant taste, and that is true with Kuohu Waters, too. There is 230 kilometers of bedrock beneath our village and the area around it, and that bedrock is the reason for the exceptional purity and taste of our waters. 

The Kaistinmäki area in Kuohu where our bottling plant is situated, has significant groundwater reserves – an estimated amount of 750,000 cubic meters of water, constantly refreshed by the natural cycle. The groundwater classification of our water is the highest it can be, Category 1. The area has been designated an important groundwater area for fresh water supplies, the quality of which is influenced by the area’s geology, climate, and low emissions from human activities.
